Welcome to Queer Stage!

A series of workshops for LGBTQIA+ folk, introducing participants to the world of theatre and performance. 

Our first series, Queer Stage: Acting will be held over four monthly sessions between September and December in the Equiano studio at Bristol Old Vic. These sessions are led by Queer Space Bristol Director and theatre maker, Lizzie Wiggs (she/her) and co-facilitated by theatre director Lydia Cook (she/her). These introductory level sessions are open to anyone interested in developing their acting skills, building confidence and having fun!

THESE SESSIONS OFFER PARTICIPANTS THE OPPORTUNITY TO:

  • Have fun, be playful and explore your creativity

  • Experience a range of acting techniques and performance styles

  • Build confidence in using your body and voice expressively

  • Be part of an ensemble, developing skills in collaboration, listening and connecting

  • Meet people and make new friends

  • Explore LGBTQIA+ Material: We’ll explore scripts, poetry and themes that reflect LGBTQIA+ experiences.

LOCATION:

Bristol Old Vic, King St, Bristol BS1 4ED. Please meet in the foyer and we’ll head to the Equiano studio together.

  • £0.00 Free - No one will ever be turned away for lack of funds. If you can't pay anything, just put O and let us welcome you in. 

  • £7.00 Open Concession – if our standard rate is too much right now; book this price range and come join us!

  • £10.00 Standard – if you can afford to, please book this rate.

  • £15.00 Pay It Forward – if you’d like to and have the means, please consider choosing this rate. Each Pay It Forward ticket subsidises one Open Concession ticket, directly supporting another LGBTQIA+ person to experience our workshops.

Access Information:
The main entrance is at street level of King Street and fully wheelchair accessible with automatic doors to facilitate comfortable access. The Equiano studio is on Level 4 and accessible via stairs and the foyer lift. 

There is a Resting Space located at Pit level, next to the Kiosk, and is open for all. Created in consultation with disabled artist Raquel Meseguer Zafe.

BOV has both Gender Neutral and Gender Specific toilet facilities available.

We hope you’ll get the most out of these sessions by attending all four, as each month offers an opportunity to build on your experience and to connect with others. However, each session is also a stand alone event, so please feel free to come to as many as you like.

FACILITATORS:

Facilitator - Lizzie Wiggs (she/her)

Lizzie is an interdisciplinary artist who trained at the École Internationale de Théâtre Jacques Lecoq. She has over 20 years experience as a theatre maker, actor and director, touring work both nationally and internationally. An experienced facilitator and teacher, Lizzie is a University lecturer and has worked as part of the NT Connections team since 2018.  

She is the executive director of Queer Space Bristol CIC.

Co- Facilitator - Lydia Cook (she/her) 

Lydia is a Bristol-based director and theatre maker creating bold, joyful work that blends music, movement, and immersive storytelling. She is passionate about amplifying untold queer history and voices from global majority communities, making theatre that is accessible, playful, and full of heart.

Recent projects include Arabella (Hampton Court & Kensington Palaces), and Holes (Wuzhen Theatre Festival, China). How to Win Against History (Bristol Old Vic, Norwich Theatre Royal,  Edinburgh Fringe), Ohio (Assembly Roxy Edinburgh Fringe, Bristol Old Vic and Young Vic London) and David Copperfield at Theatre Royal Bath.
